trout fly fishing question in Cherokee North Carolina?
ok well im going to get my papaw to take me fly fishing sometime this week and i have practicing my casting for a year in the front yard and i finally get to go and he doesn’t fly fish but im wanting to and i was curious what kind of flies do i need to use i know that i need to use dry flys and im going to be fishing in big cove state park Cherokee North Carolina all native trout waters and i have no clue what kind of fly i need to use and i thank you for all the answers
If you see nothing hatching to which you can match one of your dry flies to, switch straight to nymphs, such as the Pheasant tail nymph-size 12, the Hares ear nymph-sizes 12 and for smaller waters 14, and other option to choose from is the Copper John also in size 12.
These represent a wide variety of of aquatic fly life and as a result they catch year round. As your just starting out i would suggest keeping your leader to a max of 10ft, as this will reduce tangles when casting-if you can get some fluorocarbon in around 6lb test-RIO, Orvis, Frog Hair and Airflo are all good fluorocarbons.
You can fish your nymphs on your floating line, with ease even if they are weighted by a gold bead head etc. You can fish more than two nymphs at a time, but as your starting out, fish just one, its better to be in full control of one well fished fly than 3 not being fished correctly.
Finally i would suggest a selection of Wolly Buggers-these streamers should be in size 10 and 12-on long shank hooks, in colors such as olive, black and orange, if you can get a selection of these that are weighted by either a gold bead head or a tungsten head-these can also be fished on your floater, but unlike then nymphs, which require no retrieve pull these back after casting to allow the trout to chase them, the darker colors suggested should be used if the weather is overcast.
Finally a pair of polarized sunglasses is vital to prevent damage to your eyes from a fly caught by the wind or by a poor casting stroke, hitting you, also they will help you see into the water and cast to any fish you see.
Finally go out and enjoy your fly fishing, that’s what its all about.
