Help with a Fly Tying vise?
I’m looking to get into fly tying and am trying to find a decent vise for around $100. I’m not exactly sure if its necessary but I think I want a rotary vise. I’ve been researching the anvil apex and several griffins (the odyssey spider and the superior 3ARP). Does anyone know anything about these vises, or have any suggestions on others in my price range? I will be tying mainly smaller Trout Flies. Thanks for the help.
I have used a couple Griffin vises in the past. I think one of them was the Odyssey Spider or one very similar to it. The rotary function worked really well and I think it was that vise that made me decide I wanted a full-rotary vise. I was not impressed with the stand as I recall — it seemed a little wobbly and I could not get it to cinch down on the table and remain completely stationary. It wasn’t a huge deal and did not get in the way of tying. It was just vaguely annoying. All the other components seemed very solid and well-machined. I’m familiar with the Superior line but have never really touched one.
I’ve messed around with some of Anvil’s vises and considered getting a less-expensive model for my son (he wanted some new waders instead). These vises look very solid and functional and they have a rotary model in the $100 price range (the Apex, I’m sure you’ve come across it in your research). All the Anvil units I’ve seen seem very high-quality for the price.
Renzetti has a model called the Apprentice that is $100. It is very bare-bones but it is full rotary and it IS a Renzetti, which a lot of folks think of as the Rolls Royce of vises. I came really close to getting one of these, but got a Traveler instead. I think if I had a hundred bucks in my hand and I was going to spend it on a vise, I’d get the Apprentice.

Good Flies: Favorite Trout Patterns and How They Got Caught That Way $131.44 This intimate glimpse behind John Gierach’s vise focuses on the trout flies he has found most successful and how he ties them. There are chapters on how he developed as a fly tyer – from being a hopeless tinkerer who tried every pattern there was to settling on a large handful of favorite patterns that now catch most of his trout. Gierach explores the tools he uses for tying and advocates those that are simple and basic (and few), and he also makes his case for use of natural materials. Then there are chapters on the flies themselves – small, medium, and large mayflies (which is how he arranges them in his fly boxes), spinners, midges, caddis, hoppers, nymphs, and streamers. Throughout, the book is punctuated with fishing stories and observations on days astream as well as days at his vise, all in Gierach’s inimitable style . . . rambling a little, following this thread and that, always full of wit and deft experience and that special down-home style that has made him America’s favorite fly-fishing author. No John Gierach fan will want to miss this delightful book on the heart of all fly fishing: the fly. (6 1/4 X 9 1/4, 196 pages, illustrations) |
